  14. This conference is for the discussion of fringe science, fringe medicine,
  15. UFO's, psychic powers, water divining and other similar paranormal
  16. phenomena whose veracity or, lack thereof, can be tested by observation
  17. and experiment.

  19. Basic Disclaimer:

  21. This Echo operates under the premises espoused by various skeptical
  22. associations worldwide and CSICOP but is in NO WAY connected to those
  23. organizations.  This Echo does not represent these organisations, nor
  24. does it claim any link to those founders, writers and members of those
  25. organizations, although some of them are regular posters.
  26.  
  27. The Moderator denies any and all responsibility for the postings of others,
  28. his role is to keep discussion on topic and within the bounds of good taste
  29. and common sense.

  72. Echo Purpose:

  74.   1.  Stimulate thought and inquiry concerning the claims of pseudo-science,
  75.       fringe science, fringe medicine et al and ways of testing the validity
  76.       of these claims.
  77.  
  78.   2.  To provide a forum where discussion of these claims, their proof, or
  79.       disproof can take place, both by skeptics and believers alike.

  82. Echo Rules:
  83.  
  84.   1.  Only real names or handles conforming to the guidelines given earlier
  85.       may be used.
  86.  
  87.   2.  Discussion should be confined to the discussion of matters of interest
  88.       to skeptics.  The imponderable and the untestable are worthy of
  89.       academic interest, but as they are not able to be tested by the skeptic 
  90.       they should not be dwelled on at length.
  91.  
  92.   3.  Matters of religion will inevitably arise from time to time.  As these
  93.       areas require faith, and as such are untestable they should be minor
  94.       issues only.  Such discussion is best carried out in echoes such as
  95.       HOLYSMOKE, PHIL or one of the myriad of bible echos.  Proselytising
  96.       is completely off-topic and will not be tolerated.

  98.   4.  Personal attacks and flames will not be tolerated, if you must abuse
  99.       someone take it to NetMail.

  106. A skeptic is someone interested in the evidence for fringe-science
  107. /medicine and paranormal _testable_ claims of fact, without regard
  108. to his particular present opinions.
  109.  
  110. The emphasis on the (always entertaining) fringe prevents this from
  111. becoming a boring symposium of professional scientists and engineers.
  112. Uncertainty over what is the fringe and what is on either side is part
  113. of what keeps it interesting.  The emphasis on _testable claims of fact_
  114. excludes the religion-bashers, however much they may protest to the
  115. contrary.

  119. phenomena that defy current scientific knowledge without being shown
  120. proof of the existence of that phenomenon that conforms to the standards
  121. of acceptable scientific evidence.  It is not fence sitting or
